National Chemistry Week was celebrated at the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a Spice Identification Contest as part of the Mole Day celebration. Participants smelled various spices in their native state and then attempted to identify the spice from the scent of its oil. The structure of a prominent scent chemical in each spice was provided via engaging graphics on the table so participants could make the connection between the microscopic and the macroscopic.
Those who correctly identified five out of the seven spices were awarded ACS provided prizes such as a stuffed Professor Molenium.
